About The Raised Bed Company

Why we began
For years, most raised beds in the UK have been made from pressure-treated pine. It is inexpensive and easy to produce, but that convenience comes at the cost of longevity. Even with a chemical dip, the timber begins to deteriorate after only a few seasons, and many gardeners find themselves replacing their beds every two or three years.
The Raised Bed Company was founded to change that pattern. We wanted to create raised beds that last, made with care and respect for the materials themselves. Every design decision we make is about longevity. From the choice of timber to the method of preservation, each stage is designed to help the wood resist time, weather, and decay.
For The Raised Bed Company, Western Red Cedar was the natural choice. It contains its own protective oils, resists fungal attack, and remains stable even in constant outdoor conditions. Its fine, straight grain also gives a smooth and elegant finish. When combined with Yakisugi, the traditional Japanese technique for preserving wood through fire, the result is a surface that is both beautiful and naturally resilient.
To protect and seal the timber, we use a zero-VOC, plant-based oil that is anti-fungal, water-resistant, breathable, and protects against UV. This helps the wood retain its colour and integrity for years. The finish requires only minimal upkeep, typically a single recoat after around four years, depending on exposure.
By designing for longevity, The Raised Bed Company achieved something more than durability. The process revealed a striking aesthetic that sets our raised beds apart, combining the deep texture of charred cedar with the warmth of natural oil to create a product that is both sustainable and timeless in appearance.

How we build
That belief shapes everything The Raised Bed Company makes. Every raised bed The Raised Bed Company creates begins with time, care, and intent. Nothing is rushed, because true quality cannot be hurried. Each stage of the build is planned to ensure that strength, balance, and finish work together, creating something that will last for many years outdoors.
Our process is entirely hands-on. Every board is burned, brushed, and oiled by hand to achieve the right texture and depth of protection. This personal approach allows us to read the wood as we work, to adjust the burn, feel the surface, and refine the finish in a way machines never could. The result is consistency through craftsmanship rather than automation.
We use tools sparingly and only where they add precision, such as in the final refinement of the char or the fit of the frame. The rest is done with simple hand tools that allow complete control over the outcome. This careful balance of traditional skill and modern accuracy produces a finish that feels natural but engineered to endure.
When the wood arrives, that is where it ends for others, and where it begins for us.
Each raised bed from The Raised Bed Company is created by a skilled craftsman, representing hours of attention, judgement, and care. It stands apart from mass production, a considered build from start to finish, shaped by experience rather than speed. The difference can be seen, felt, and measured over time, not just in appearance but in how long each bed continues to serve the garden that inspired it. You can learn more about each stage of our craftsmanship on our Process page.

What we believe
The Raised Bed Company believes sustainability begins with responsibility. Every decision The Raised Bed Company makes is focused on creating raised beds that last, perform, and leave no harmful impact behind. We do not view sustainability as a label or a selling point, but as a practical commitment to working with natural materials in the right way.
True sustainability is not achieved through replacement or offsetting. It comes from a design that prevents waste in the first place. When a raised bed is built to last for many years instead of just a few, it saves resources, energy, and time. Building for longevity is the simplest and most effective form of environmental care.
In a world that often values speed and convenience, The Raised Bed Company chooses patience and precision. Every stage of our work reflects this belief: slower, more deliberate production that favours quality over quantity, and integrity over scale.
Our purpose is to build products that serve both people and the planet. Raised beds that protect the soil, use natural preservation methods, and require little maintenance. By doing things properly from the start, we create something lasting, useful, and honest in both form and function.
True economy is in quality.

Our mission
The mission of The Raised Bed Company is to create a better standard for garden design, one built on lasting quality, natural materials, and genuine sustainability. We believe that thoughtful craftsmanship and responsible design can exist side by side, producing something that serves the garden and protects the environment at the same time.
Our approach is simple but deliberate. We build raised beds that last, made with care, precision, and respect for the timber. Each design decision focuses on performance and longevity rather than speed or scale. We aim to inspire confidence in the idea that a raised bed should be a lasting part of the garden, not a temporary structure replaced every few years.
The Raised Bed Company exists to prove that durability and beauty can work together. Every raised bed we create shows what is possible when sustainability is treated as a design principle, not an afterthought.
