Sustainability

Our sustainability philosophy is grounded in respect for materials and longevity. Every design choice we make aims to reduce waste, limit impact, and create products that outlast trends.
Our sustainability philosophy
Sustainability, for us, is about respect. Respect for materials, for the environment, and for the time and energy that go into making something well. We believe the most sustainable products are those that last as long as possible before needing replacement, and that principle shaped this company from the beginning.
By designing raised beds that endure, we reduce waste and make better use of the resources already available. Every decision, from the timber we select to the methods we use, follows a simple rule: minimise impact and maximise longevity.
Working in balance with nature
Our process depends on harmony, not treatment. The timber, the flame, and the oil are chosen to complement one another, each supporting the others to protect the wood naturally. Together, they create stability, resist decay, and reduce the impact of weather without relying on chemicals or preservatives.
To understand why this traditional technique protects timber so effectively, see our article How Yakisugi protects timber: the science behind the burn.
Because every part of the system works with the material rather than against it, the wood stays strong and visually consistent for years. Sustainability also extends to care. A light recoat after several seasons will restore the finish, but the beds can just as easily be left to age naturally. Either choice reflects the same principle: well-made materials that continue to perform without waste or intervention.
Every step of our work, from drying, charring, brushing and oiling, is done by hand and guided by experience. You can see how it all comes together on our Process page.
Local materials, local responsibility
Our timber comes from trusted Dorset sawmills, all within a short distance of where we work. Keeping supply local reduces transport emissions and ensures we know exactly where each board has come from. It also supports the local economy and keeps valuable resources in use within the region.
By working closely with local suppliers, we build trust and shared understanding. Regular conversations mean our values align, from responsible sourcing to the way materials are handled. That connection helps maintain quality and consistency while keeping our sustainability goals grounded in real relationships.
Every board is used in full, and any sawdust or shavings are composted. Nothing goes to waste. Each piece of timber serves a purpose, and every decision reflects our commitment to using local resources responsibly.

Minimising energy, maximising care
We let our timber dry naturally because it is the better process. Air drying keeps the structure of the wood intact and allows it to reach balance at its own pace. The result is timber that is more stable, easier to work with, and longer lasting. All of this is achieved without the high energy demand of kiln drying.
Each board is brushed and oiled by hand, taking time rather than power to achieve the best result. The only electrical tools used are a saw for cutting to length and a rechargeable drill for fixings, keeping energy use to a minimum. Even the electricity that supports our work and powers our website comes from 100 percent renewable sources.
By choosing patience over speed, we reduce environmental impact and produce a stronger, more durable product in the process.
Always Improving
Sustainability is not a plan on paper. It is an ongoing process of observation and adjustment. We stay open to change because new ideas, materials, and methods often reveal better ways of doing things. When that happens, we adapt.
Our approach is to keep learning from experience and from the people we work with. Whether it is finding a more efficient way to source, a new finish that performs better, or a simpler process that saves energy, progress is made by staying flexible.
We do not claim perfection. What matters is that we keep moving in the right direction, guided by the same principles that shaped this company from the start: respect for materials, care in workmanship, and responsibility in every decision.
Sustainability is never finished, but progress is always possible when care leads every decision.
